Welcome to my storytellers forum!
Before you read, please remember that writing is a sacred practice. In order to write, you first have to be willing to open up yourself up to an audience. This means there is a great level of vulnerability in the process. The writing process is not linear. Thoughts and feelings manifest themselves all at once. This forum is space for us all to try to place it in a logical order. This can be difficult and take many edits and adjustments within a conversation. Know that my work is one from the heart and not from an assumed professional expertise. My writing is based on my personal goals to share the voices that are usually not heard. Much of what I write can be seen as radical and aggressive by today's cultural standards. My mission with #teachlove is to share my words unfiltered, and often unedited, to help start conversations that will advocate for self-care and accepting differences to open up avenues in our communities so that everyone's story can be told.

- Homeschool & UnschoolIt is often difficult for Dad to engage with our homeschool life because without his long hours in corporate America we would not be able to support our homeschooling lifestyle. So it is important for us to find ways to homeschool on the weekends when he is with us. And sometimes it is just necessary to get Dad into classes that help him escape from his work week as well. In our marriage, my husband and I have been working on learning more about our ancestral past in order to help us reconnect to the values that have seemingly disappeared as our families assimilate to “American” culture. As we homeschool, it is imperative that we constantly seek out events, classes and people that share our values, traditions and heritage. And even when those are difficult for us to find, we have learned that finding other indigenous families that are well-rooted in their cultural traditions helps to mend the disconnect that we are experiencing. It is easy for me to attend a lot of these types of workshops with kids or with other moms. But finding one that benefits Dads is a constant search. So I was thrilled when Amelia Butler and Karl Burrows were offering a Haka workshop for the whole family in North Hollywood. I was a little nervous when I found out that the workshop would be held at Evolution Dance Studios in North Hollywood where hit dance shows are filmed. I was also a little nervous when I decided to only sign up Dad, so that we can see him do his thing and have some time for himself. But I have worked with Amelia before and she has a very special talent for making everyone feel like they are capable of anything. Amelia and Karl started the workshop with a simple warm up with basic movements that everyone was able to do. I was impressed with the number of people and diversity within the class. There were dancers, performers, families, kids and other friends who just wanted to try something new and different. Amelia and Karl were very in tune with all the needs of the class. They were able to pick out and assist each member with translations and learning the language. They gave everyone the important meaning and spirit behind the haka and also gave everyone an opportunity to laugh at themselves. Their teaching was done with the positive encouragement that is always present in a familial atmosphere. And before I knew it, the group was powerfully performing the whole haka. Our children were happy to have the opportunity to watch Dad complete a class and try something new as the usual roles require us to watch them. This workshop was also a really amazing way to connect Maori values with our own. My husband had an amazing time and felt this was a great way to give rise to his spiritual energy. We were excited to hear that Amelia and Karl would be holding more Haka Works events in the near future. Our family is excited to see Dad perform again and learn more about traditional Maori culture. If you would like to learn more about Haka Works, you can find more about Karl Burrows and his passion to teach Maori traditions here. - Homeschool & UnschoolEvery once in a while you meet an amazing group of people who check off all the boxes on your homeschool wish list. This year at Game School Con we linked up with Game Crossing, LLC run by Victor Palacios. Game Crossing, LLC is a diverse group of boys who all work together to create gaming tournaments and online entertainment productions. Their creative endeavors not only assist them by creating healthy fun for their communities, many of the boys have expanded into the beginnings of professional careers. This is why we were so excited to meet the Game Crossing, LLC team at Game School Con! At the homeschool convention, the Game Crossing, LLC team hosted an awesome Super Smash Brothers Tournament for kids ages 8 and up. They had the older and younger groups battling in separate tournaments, but ran them simultaneously. What impressed me most about this set up was how well it was organized and managed by all of the teens in the room. They had everything under control, never lost their tempers and never seemed annoyed by the hundreds of questions constantly coming their way. The entire team was helpful and calm the whole day. Best of all, my son - who is usually shy and easily overwhelmed by a room full of moving and excited people- was totally in his element. The atmosphere set by Game Crossing, LLC was professional, friendly and fun. Every child displayed great sportsmanship during the tournament and even when their time in the tournament ended- many of the kids stuck around to share tips, trade screen names or just cheer on the other players in the tournament that they had just met that weekend! So I was excited to hear that Game Crossing, LLC was going to host a 12 week Introduction to Youth ESports Course this spring. Even more exciting was that they have linked with Inspire Charter to become a vendor which will allow all of us to use our funds to access this course. We are looking forward to working with the Game Crossing team in the future and are excited to learn about the possibility our son starting a professional career in this field. - Our HistoryA dear friend of mine recently invited me to join her at Koko Lane's Mini-Mama Retreat. I was super excited for a relaxing day of fun with other mamas. I was especially excited to see Koko again because the first time I met her, I learned that not only is she an awesome homeschooling mom, she was UNSCHOOLED herself! There is nothing I love more than to see examples of powerful homeschooled people doing their craft professionally. So, I prepped the kids for the day with Dad and headed out to meet the moms. Now, I consider myself somewhat advanced in self-care practices as a mom that advocates big time for "putting on your mask first". But I was still not prepared for the wonderfully romantic and peaceful setting Koko set up for us. She lead us all into a cozy candle-lit room decorated with flower petals, pillows and blankets. We chose our mats to find she also had Shiatsu massage machines for each one of us. We got settled easily and quickly because we are moms and are always excited to lie down and relax-- uninterrupted! Koko was an amazing host and gently lead us through setting an intention, understanding some background of hypnotherapy (YES! HYPNOTHERAPY!) and meditation. Initially, when I heard of the "Mama Retreat" I thought of a mani/pedi girl talk sesh with a mini-massage. So this whole experience was even better than I imagined and we had just started. Once we all settled in, Koko lead us through a relaxation exercise that helped us prolong the "in between" stage of sleep and consciousness. Her singing bowl paired with the Shiatsu massage immersed us deeper into relaxation while simultaneously playing to our audio and physical senses. Some of us listened to her soothing voice with anticipation of finding answers in our hypnotic state while others took the time to fall deep into our own little worlds. We all took the same journey together and were lead through the same exercise; yet we all had completely different stories to share when we regrouped. To add to our experience, Koko passed out delicious snacks and tea while we chatted about how each of us felt so much more at peace and connected with ourselves and each other. I cannot explain just how powerful and amazing this Mama Retreat was for me. I am excited to book a private session for my husband and myself this summer. I am also interested in organizing a group event with some of my closest friends. This is a must-do experience for everyone. Koko was just lovely and I am looking forward to working with her again soon. If you'd like to try this out for yourself, Koko is offering a few Retreat experiences for FREE on her website.
